Robert Trent Jones Jr., the renowned golf course architect, built his first Arizona layout right here. We'll warn you in advance: this one's a doozy. It's a thinker's course for "strategy golf" that forces you to calculate every shot with exceptional care. Similar to Longbow, Las Sendas doesn't shy away from the surrounding desert scrubland. The fairways incorporate it, as well as bodies of water and tons of bunkers. Before you even arrive, you'll need a vehicle that can conquer all this dusty desert terrain. For that, we recommend the aptly named GMC Terrain. Relax at Apache Wells Country Club Apache Wells at 5601 E Hermosa Vista Drive has been around longer than most in the area. Built in the mid-1960s, it started as a nine-hole course. Thanks to Milt Coggins, it expanded to a complete 18 holes. Apache Wells won't push your limits like Las Sendas, and it's the most walkable on this list. Seniors love it for being flat and having a shorter layout. Same as the above, expect everything that the desert can offer as a backdrop at Apache Wells. Palms, cactuses, the whole getup. It's a relaxing course for those who want an easy Sunday. Mesa Country Club Mesa Country Club is the only private option on this list, located at 660 W Fairway Drive. Unlike other courses in the region, this one has stayed relatively unchanged since it opened in 1948. Each hole gives you seven sets of tees. The biggest challenge is getting the ball around the big trees lining the fairways. In one section, you'll even get to drive a ball over the Tempe Canal.
