When your battery starts to die, your car will give you a few clues. If you notice any of these, it’s important to get a new car battery from your GMC dealership as soon as possible. If you wait too long, there can be damage to the electrical components of the vehicle if the battery fully fails, and, of course, you could end up stranded when you least expect it.

Electrical Jitters

Car Battery

Pay attention to the quirks in your car’s electrical system. Do your radio speakers crackle or dim intermittently? Do your gauges flicker or malfunction briefly? These seemingly minor glitches can be early signs of a struggling battery, unable to maintain consistent voltage throughout its network.

Infotainment Issues

Modern cars rely heavily on digital displays and touchscreens, so if your navigation system loses its saved locations, your radio forgets your presets, or your clock resets itself, a failing battery could be the culprit. These memory-dependent features are particularly vulnerable to fluctuations in power supply.

That Chilling Click

Imagine turning your key, expecting the familiar roar of the engine, but only hearing a single, sharp click. This click, often accompanied by dim dashboard lights, is a stark indicator of a depleted battery. It signifies that there’s insufficient power to even attempt cranking the engine, leaving you stranded and requiring a jumpstart. If you find yourself having to jumpstart your car frequently, this is a warning sign that your battery is on its last legs. Start budgeting for a new one soon.

An Unwelcome Aroma

If you detect a faint sulfurous odor wafting from the engine bay, especially after stopping the car, it could be a sign of internal battery damage. This smell is similar to rotten eggs, arises from the release of sulfuric acid from the battery cells, and it’s a warning of overheating or overcharging.

The Weight of Time

Just like all good things, car batteries don’t last forever. Most have a lifespan of 3–5 years, depending on usage and climate. If your battery is nearing its sunset years, even without noticeable symptoms, consider a proactive replacement to prevent unforeseen breakdowns.

Coughing Starts

Your engine should always just roar to life as soon as you turn the key or press the Start button. If it doesn’t, and it sounds like it’s coughing or whining as it struggles to get started, the battery starts to go. You have some time at this point, but not much, so start thinking about your new battery now and call us to make an appointment.
