Pack the GMC or Buick and Discover These Five State Parks Near Mesa, AZ

1. Lost Dutchman State Park

A short drive east on Route 88 leads to the Lost Dutchman State Park. Named after the legend of a lost gold mine, this gem has some challenging trails both within the park and leading into the wilds of the surrounding forest. For a less strenuous experience, wander the Native Plant Trail or enjoy a picnic while watching for wildlife. Open every day, there are camping sites available, as well as a gift shop.

2. Tonto Natural Bridge State Park

Drive north into a fairytale valley to visit Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. The 183-foot high geologic feature is thought to be the world’s largest naturally-formed, travertine bridge.

3. Picacho Peak State Park

Swing south into the Sonoran Desert and you’ll find Picacho Peak State Park. The 1,500-foot peak that marks the park is the pinnacle of a meandering trail offering open desert vistas with the opportunity to spot native wildlife like jackrabbits and coyotes. The peak is an historic landmark, with more information available at the visitors’ center. The park also has a gift shop, play and picnic areas, and campground facilities.

4. McFarland State Historic Park 

For a look into Arizona’s history, visit McFarland State Historic Park, which showcases one of the state’s first courthouses. Constructed in 1878 of adobe blocks, and wood transported by wagon, the building shows how architecture transitioned in the area. Governor McFarland bought the structure in 1974 and donated it to the parks board for posterity. While there, don’t miss the Florence WWII Prisoner of War Camp exhibit.

5. Roper Lake State Park

Up for a longer road trip? Roper Lake State Park is worth the drive in order to relax in the revitalizing, natural hot springs. Roper Lake is a fishing destination to hook largemouth bass and rainbow trout, and birdwatchers delight in sightings of cardinals, owls, and various waterfowl.
