Located in the eastern outskirts of Phoenix, the city of Mesa, AZ, sits conveniently between one of the largest and busiest urban areas in the United States and some of the most expansive nature reserves in the region. 1. Phoenix

With a population of almost five million inhabitants in its metropolitan area, the city of Phoenix is a place where you will never run out of activities and places to visit. The capital and most populous city in the state of Arizona features numerous local landmarks that attract visitors from all around the world, as well as cultural centers, museums, and excellent restaurants.

Located a little under 20 miles west of Mesa, downtown Phoenix is, unsurprisingly, the most popular day trip destination among locals looking for a vibrant city full of life and entertainment options. Some of the places you should not miss while exploring the area include the Arizona Science Center, the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Basilica, the Arizona State Capitol, and Papago Park.

2. South Mountain Park and Preserve

Offering breathtaking views of the entire Phoenix metropolitan area, South Mountain Park and Preserve is the perfect destination for anyone wanting to enjoy some time in nature without driving too far away from the city. Considered one of the largest urban parks in the United States, this place covers an area of a little over 16,000 acres and is a popular weekend destination among Phoenix locals and visitors from all over the state.

Getting from downtown Mesa to the entrance of South Mountain Park and Preserve takes about 25 minutes by car, driving 18 miles west along Baseline Road and route US-60. Some of the activities that make this nature reserve a great day trip destination include hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife watching. If you can, make sure to stay in the area until sundown and enjoy the stunning views of the city as it lights up before dusk.

3. McDowell Mountain Regional Park

Another popular nature reserve where you can spend an entire day hiking or simply taking in some fresh air and enjoying great views, McDowell Mountain Regional Park is located about 30 miles northeast of downtown Mesa. This beautiful and expansive nature reserve covers an area of over 21,000 acres and is home to large populations of deer, birds, coyotes, and other local wildlife species.
