Overview
The GMC Sierra 1500 is among the front runners in the full-size light-duty pickup truck class. For 2024, the Sierra has received some upgrades, particularly for the available diesel engine. So, how has the new model improved, compared to the 2023 Sierra?
Powertrains and Capability
With the Sierra, you can choose from four powertrains: a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, a 5.3-liter V-8, a 6.2-liter V-8, and a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six diesel. For 2024, the turbo diesel has been improved to make more power and is available or standard depending on the trim.
In the 2023 Sierra, the diesel delivered 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. It now generates 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet. That gives the diesel-powered Sierra an increased maximum towing capacity of 13,300 pounds when properly equipped, along with a payload of up to 1,870 pounds.
Trim Levels
For 2024, the GMC Sierra is offered in Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate trim levels. The range covers every need from the workhorse Pro trim to the luxurious Denali models and the off-road specialized AT4 and AT4X.
The AT4X, introduced for the 2023 model year, came standard with the 6.2-liter V-8 engine. Along with the AT4, the 2024 AT4X now features the mighty turbo diesel as standard to provide the low-end grunt required for superb off-road capability.
