Trim Levels (Exterior)
The entry-level Sierra 3500 HD has 18-inch steel wheels, LED headlights and taillights, and manually adjustable towing mirrors. It also comes with bed steps and a locking tailgate. The SLE adds 18-inch alloy wheels and power-adjustable trailering mirrors, and it comes with the MultiPro configurable tailgate. Step up to the SLT for power-folding and extendable tow mirrors, cargo bed lighting, and keyless entry, or to the AT4 for a spray-in bed liner, off-road suspension, and skid plates. The upscale Denali has 20-inch alloy wheels, chrome exterior trim, side steps, and a power-sliding rear window.
Engine (Power)
The base engine for the Sierra 3500 is a 6.6-liter gas V-8 engine. It generates 401 horsepower and comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. A 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 delivers 445 horsepower and gets you 910 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive comes standard with all trims except the AT4 and Denali. These top two trims come standard with four-wheel drive, and you can opt for this with the rest of the lineup.
Performance
The most powerful Sierra with the diesel engine can tow up to 35,500 pounds and carry a 7,442 payload. If you have the gas V-6, it can still tow up to 16,800 pounds with a regular hitch and up to 17,200 with a gooseneck. The ride in the Sierra HD is smooth and quiet, even when towing heavy loads. The independent front suspension does an excellent job of evening out rough roads and making this large truck easy to maneuver.
Interior
There is plenty of room in the Sierra with the Double cab and Crew cab. The SLE upgrades the vinyl upholstery from the base to a high-quality cloth and adds front under-seat storage. Bump up to the SLT for heated front seats, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The base Sierra has a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You'll get a 120-volt power outlet in the SLT along with a wireless version of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and an 8-inch touch screen. Wireless charging is an added feature in the Denali.
Safety Features
Every GMC Sierra has a rearview camera, but a step up to the SLE gets you the optional Driver Alert I package and the Driver Alert II package with features such as forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic braking. These packages also add a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera system, and front and rear parking sensors. If you want all these standard, choose the Denali. The Sierra also offers a rear camera mirror, which turns the rearview mirror into a video screen with a wide-angle view behind the truck.
